Back in 2006 I had a quick visit to Northam for work. After doing my thing at the hospital, the boss and I headed down to the local footy club for a drink. This little chap was clambering all over the furniture to try and get in the shot... and I finally got one of him. Just makes you smile. Here's the start of the week and new adventures ahead.

OK, something a little different. Today I was preparing to spend some time with one of my mentee's about goals and directions for her career, and remembered a quote someone had shown me recently. It resonated with me and both my careers (strategic reform and photography). Yes, I spend lots of time and resources in improving my craft, vision and skill... but without trying to sound all 'wanky*', I am driven and compelled to do it (working), and I love it, and it fun (playing). So my little bit of sharing today is that I hope you have, or are able to develop something in your life that equally compels you and is enjoyable.

OK, I have another image from the calendar. This time of Rixy. Great bloke. He was really great to work with. Working on that wire ladder is bloody difficult, and to hang around and try and get into position is a great dare harder than it looks. The rest of the images were great from the shoot... but this is the final image.

Nic and Juddy (pictured below, Nic (L) Juddy (R)) are mates of ours who are on an adventure for the rest of the year. They are driving up to Broome (about 2300km away) over the next couple of days to spend a year up there. Whilst it was sad to see the guys go... hey, now we have a good reason to come up to Broome for a break.

Well for those of us in Oz, welcome to 2012. Those buddies in far off countries, enjoy your New Years Eve.

Now to start 2012 off with a bang, I thought I would share one of my all time favourite images. This one is of my buddy Damien, who is a professional diver, and we did a shoot for a fundraising campaign which we are expecting to be launched this year.

I really like this image and had the opportunity to shoot it twice... first whilst we were scouting locations, then again many months later. Now what you don't see is the crew (Craig and Paul) getting very wet and trying to avoid getting the flash equipment wet, and myself dropping my flash remote in the water, and copping a full wave in the face! Thank goodness for pro-gear with good seals!

Anyways ladies and gents... welcome to the new year and I hope you enjoy this image and get to see the final image in the production that it was created for... more to come...

Phew. Last lot of certificates printed up! Now to wrap the images. I might have to secure the resources of the official wrapper :-) Really happy with the images and the certificates. Big thanks to Fitzgerald Photo Labs for handling all the orders as they were coming through. This bunch* are all face mount acrylics which the image has a sandwich of clear acrylic in front. I'll grab a shot over the next day or so.

Broome Salt Artist Proof

Bit of a different type of image from me this time. This is an image of the salt flats outside of Broome, whilst climbing to cruising altitude in a light aircraft. I really like this one at the moment. The original image has actually been made into a very large painting that is hanging in my office by one of my ex-colleagues Jeff Ovens. I'll take a photo of the painting tomorrow.

I felt that I haven't posted something floral for a while, and I am a sucker for great floral imagery. I did have someone ask me about why I actually take pictures of flowers (and often unusual ones), and I think that I am drawn to the beauty of their design. Simplicity of form, colour and texture... anyhoo I hope you like this one. Another richly coloured image for you. A red beauty.... would be great on a large acrylic!

The Nikon AIPP Then Event: Day Four part two

... ok the down hill run.... Two more sessions to go.

First was Steve Saporito, who spoke on portrait marketing. What I got out of Steve's talk was the importance of market segmentation, and being clear with your marketing with each of the segments. Other messages included strategic alliances, and understanding what the people you are serving value.

Next and finally was the industry forum hosted by SBS Insight host and journalist Jenny Brockle, on the topic of "what makes for a professional photographer".

Now my initial reaction was - brave choice, she will have to work this hard but it was really fascinating to hear from a number of the panel members and the audience on diverging or similar views. Certainly, there was a theme that there are clear difference between the degree of professionalism, consistent technical competence, craft/skill, business acumen and adhering to a industry code of conduct. It was clear that gear is not the key point, which is just as well as the barriers to entry into the industry are tumbling down. Personally, experience and expertise and in a lot of instances, relationships are important. It was good to see that the new Continuing Professional Development program seemed to get a big tick, with the intent of ensuring contemporary skill development with the ultimate aim of branding and recognising an Accredited photographer.

The panel members were... awesome (yes I know... awesome again), with a high degree of insight. Jenny did a great job in exploring the topic. In all, a great discussion that seemed to pass very quickly.

Then at the end I had an opportunity to talk with Rosh Sillars for a bit, which was a real treat. Thanks Rosh for the time.

All in all I was very impressed with the scale, scope and professionalism of the conference. The mix was great, and evidenced a well thought out conference program that had something for everyone. I would highly recommend attendance at next years event, which will be in NSW from the 26 - 29 Aug 2012... and I'm already booked in!

The Nikon AIPP Then Event: Day Four part one

Oh boy... now you have read three of the days of the conference. Moving, powerful, inspirational. Again, if I had walked away at the end of day three I would have been content. BUT, Day Four commenced with a bang and I was blown away again.

First up, another international keynote by Jesh de Rox. What an amazing guy. I'm going to post something below from a master photographer who was also at the event. But before I do I will try and sum up my feeling about this session. I'm going to use powerful, profound, emotional, and genuine. Jesh has a gift in his ability to connect with people and enable them to express something very deep. Jesh is a portrait photographer, who gave up a booming wedding photography business, do only do 30 couple portrait shots per year, and teach his approach to other photogs. Now for those of you who know me, I have a psychology and business background and I understand his techniques and approach, but the thing I have learnt over the years is that you can't bullshit this stuff... you either 'feel it' and 'be it' or you dont. I liked his approach and style. I get why some people wont like him/his approach, but... you can't argue with success. I can image people trying to emulate his approach through replicating his techniques and not quiet getting the same outcomes. Jesh is a pretty savy, talented and creative guy. Kudos.

Oh, the quote from the other photographer. I read this on Sue Bryce's blog, she has captured it more eloquently than I felt it, or could express it. I wont put it all up but if you want to know what an experience and accomplished portrait photographer thought of the session, go to her site, and find the post on the 26 Oct. titled "Jesh de Rox".

From Sue ... "As he began I listened to the messages, work from the heart, value, care, life journey and purpose. All things that most good speakers unfold about their own path to success and all of this resonated with me. The way of the artist, the experience society that we are returning to. A good name yes, but just a label for an avenue to CONNECT and direct a client in front of the camera to their inside truth and light ready for capture.

After 22 years of shooting portrait I can honestly say, I have never seen a live demonstration of that power. I have never seen so many people openly cry. Men and women. Not from a contrived tear jerker way but truly mind blowing eye opening truth. Australians are a hard public to present to. Like Kiwi’s we are colder more rigid outwardly than our American counterparts, not less receptive just more ‘contained’ if you will. A product of our Poppy cropping upbringing. We don’t make a noise, we listen and we laugh gently when it is funny, no false bravado or as we say here. (No blowing smoke up your arse.) This is a true statement . . sorry Ha.
Today I watched Men cry, some went and called their wives and children. Women were sobbing. and NOT because Jesh did ANYTHING to make us cry. But because he took a gorgeous couple out of the audience and asked them some questions about each other. What they then did made us cry. I will never be the same after witnessing the exchange, between this Man and Woman. They will never be the same, I’m quite sure. There is an audience of Photographers here that have just experienced the most simple, beautiful and honest thing you can see and that is the open expression of love between 2 human beings.
Jesh you are a hero for being brave enough to remind the world of the beauty of why we are here. I stand corrected, informed, honoured and humbled. and I GET IT !

The Nikon AIPP The Event: Day Two

OK, back on task. The Event Day Two.... Now this was the first full day, and it was really busy.

Up at the crack of dawn... and yes to all my landscape buddies, see I 'can' get up early (but normally prefer to be going to bed at this time ;-) )

First session of the day, international keynote by David Burnett. As you know I'm going to say, AWESOME. David who I bumped into and said a brief hello, gave the most amazing talk with profound iconic photo-journalistic imagery that most people would go '... oh I know that image... '. Website to check his work http://www.davidburnett.com/ and I dont think I can do him justice. A multi-award winning, honoured, and from his own site " David has won virtually every award in the field of magazine photojournalism. " and was moved by his tenacity, humour and vision. Just three small things from David, 1) dont throw anything away, 2) look to the Flemish painters if you want to understand portraits and light, and 3) be kind in what you do.

Next was a plenary workshop for those interested in how to deal with commercial jobs, how to deal with those difficult or sometimes strange calls asking for quotes. The session was great, with four of the industry commercial photogs being on the panel. All the younger members of the profession were madly scribble down there words of wisdom. We all got involved so much so we went half way through lunch, but it was gold.

Next, after a brief feed and wander around the trade booths (and a hug from Nikon Julie) it was into to listen to Rosh Sillars http://www.roshsillars.com/. Now if you know anything (or want to know anything) about photography/SEO/social media, and digital marketing then I would recommend Rosh. He also does a podcast which I would highly recommend. Rosh spoke of digital marketing and how to grow your profile via various strategies, developing relationships, and branding. What I really liked about Rosh's talk was that is was not full of jargon. This guy was very easily able to articulate very complex marketing and technology strategies in a very simple and easy to digest and action. Again, suggest you check him out and subscribe to his blog.

Next off to hear Glenn Gibson again. This time he talked more about his studio and growing his business to include CGI and CGA. Glenn as I mentioned is well know in the automotive industry, and I went to listen to him explain his craft, and look at some of the technical aspects of lighting, and to explore how this might be of relevance in my niche. Oh, another great guy who is very willing to share his knowledge.

Next a quick change, and on with the Fedora, for the Nikon Speakeasy Cocktail Event. Spent most of the night chatting with Jack Atley and Brendan from Lowepro. Jack is a multi award winning commercial and portrait photographer... jeepers, I can really categorise his work. He's good! And a bit of a lad ;-) He is also the official photographer for the Sydney Opera House, and winner of this years Moran photographic portrait prize, and it just so happens I have been wanting to meet him for sometime and follow his work, so it was great to spend some time. 2011 Nikon AIPP The Event: Day One

I know, I know... going in back in time out of sequence, oh well, consider it arty! :D

Ok, a brief overview of the AIPP annual conference, particularly for people I know who either dont know about the conference, or want to know about how I was moved/motivated by the speakers.

Day One, was a gentle start. Thank goodness.   Only two workshops for the day. The first one was very very motivating. Given by Glen Gibson, who offered to step in for an overseas speaker that at the last moment was unable to make it. Anyway, Glen has an agency called Bluefish which is a visual communications agency. Glen started his career in photography and has grown his imagery and communication skills and agency. Anyways... an AWESOME guy, very genuine, and very willing to share his experience and knowledge. His specialist area, car photography. He spoke about that and the growth of CGI/CGA and advertising. Awesome. Made me think about the fine art applications for the work. Check out some of his work!

Also spent some time talking with Glen at the cocktail party later in the day. Very nice guy.

Next on the agenda was Sue Bryce. An amazing woman, with a unique style to portrait photography, particularly focusing on women. She was funny, inspiring, creative and curvey ;-) (in-conference joke)

What did I get out of listening to her...crap... so much good stuff... have to check my notes...oh, and a plug for Upad on the iPad, got HEAPS of questions about the app I was scribling notes on at the conference.   Ah, yes, putting the glamour back into glamour photography. Learnt a lot about valuing your work (if its good enough), also posing women, and about developing and adding to your community. Anyhoo... wicked portrait photographer!

Next was a talk by Hilary Wardhaugh, on her exhibition, "Die like a dog", which was about a her journey documenting a friend of hers who had head/neck cancer. It was a very personal and profound talk and I got what a profound difference photography makes in you lives. Though I suspect that other people got different things out of it. Highly recommend that if you get a chance to see this exhibition that you do, particularly if Hilary is talking about it. It was profound, moving, and touching. Oh, and dont be put off by the title.

Next, with a quick change, was off to the National Wine Centre, for the offical welcome and cocktail party. Here as I mentioned where I spent a great evening talking to Andris Apse, Glen Gibson and Julie Kimpton. Three awesome people.

What an amazing day! Full on and impressive, and I think my head hurts, but I'm too tired to be sure.

Day Three of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, annual conference, 2011 Nikon AIPP The Event. (and no it's not just a Nikon event, they are the head sponsors... It's very ecumenical! ;-)

The morning kicked off with an amazing gentleman, and landscape photographer, Andris Apse. Andris is a New Zealand landscape photographer, who is very talented, tenacious and humble. Anyone that will camp onto of a mountain for a couple of weeks to get the right shot is awesome, and his work speaks for itself. I had the pleasure of having a great chat with Andres at the cocktail party after Tony Hewitt introduced us. I have to confess I had no idea who he was, and I was stuck with what a nice guy he and his wife were..., and very geniune. Next morning, he was giving the keynote address which made everyone very quiet! Andris's website www.andrisapse.com

Speaking of Tony, another nice guy (shit, I hope he doesn't read this!). He is the MC for the event. Tony was recently awarded Grand Master Photographer, and is another very talented guy. Also he is extremely passionate about increasing the professionalism and education of the professional photographic community, and a real gentleman who actually goes out of his way to help the 'baby' photogs. Anways I disgress, Tony's talk was next, and was very entertaining and insightful.. all about connecting with people. Tony Hewitt's webiste

Next was a talk by Gavin Blue, President of Heartfelt and the Australian Commercial and Media Photography association, to those photogs thinking of joining the Heartfelt community. What is Heartfelt? Ahh, I'm glad you asked...

Heartfelt is a volunteer organisation of professional photographers from all over Australia dedicated to giving the gift of photographic memories to families that have experienced stillbirths, premature and ill infants and children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units of their local hospitals, as well as children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Next, was a very quick lunch beak then off to Mercury Megaloudis's talk on keeping the passion alive. In which he talked about what drives, motivates and challenges him to remain a highly awarded photographer... including my favourites his dog portraits, for which he was awarded Portrait Photographer of the Year in 2008! Then off to a Peter Eastway, Kayell and Epson sponsored hands on workshop on Fine Art file preparation and printing. Thank you for Peter for all the information, and to Kayell and Epson for access to the computers, printers and great Canson papers. I printed up my iconic calla lily image and a portrait of Damien on an amazing fine art paper. VERY IMPRESSED... I'll do a shot of them tomorrow as the light in the room wont do them justice.

So that was Day Three... I'll go back and do a bit of an overview of Days One and Two tomorrow... as I need to pass out!

Having a fun time out on a shoot with Genevieve and Sarah in Fremantle. With a long lens on I had to get across a very busy road in downtown Fremantle, which proved interesting. Genevieve and Sarah, and all the lights on one side of the street, and me in between two cars, out of sight on the other side of the street taking the shots... and all these people driving by wondering what these two woman and a heap of a photography gear were doing without a photog in site! Hey all,

As you know I have been incredibly fortunate to work on a large commission, providing fine art pieces for a number of buildings for a new complex in Abu Dhabi. Well after a bit of digging I have found an artists rendering of the finished buildings. My works are going across all buildings. Current status? Work are all shipped and now in Dubai for framing, and on target for installation in September. Soooo excited to see them up! Again, a big thanks to my Gary, for providing the opportunity to do this... truely an amazing experience, learnt so much. Anyways... the pic you say? what? where is it? hehehe... here you go...

Afternoon all. Yes I have been a bit quiet lately, with the war wound and all.

Good news on the thumb front, its healing REALLY well. So much so I was even out with the camera today. Anyways, I have recently got into Phase One Capture One software as my principal RAW processor. I'm VERY impressed with it. Anyhoo... I've been having a look at a number of my iconic shots recently and reprocessing and reinterpreting them.

The one I have had a look at again over the weekend was an image I called Black Glory. I orginally produced as an A2 piece for a very dear friend for a Christmas present, and looks very striking. You can find the original post of this one here Black Glory - Original.

The reinterpretation? I'm glad you asked... I found the that the colour saturation and contrast and blue highlights work really well. The finished piece... for you.

An image from the air, flying out of Broome. I have a large 1x1.5m painting of this image in my office that a very talented member of the team painted. Thanks Jeff!

The image itself was captured in a light aircraft about 30 seconds after take off. Now if I learnt anything from this shot, was, I love aerial photography. I will post a few more of the northwest. And the other thing was to ALWAYS have your camera with you. Something I dont always do... but am getting better about.

At least I always have 'a' camera with me... just might not be 'the' camera I want to shoot with.

PS the shoot this weekend was GREAT... did the group shot, about 30 of the guys, and a reshoot of a particular favorite shot of Damien that I felt we could improve. Good news, both concepts came up really well and look great! Did you want a peek??? Special shout out to my other assistant for the project Craig Bush, for suggesting a kick-ass shot! He's another one to watch out for ... when he gets his website up! Craig... are you reading this ;-)

Well didn't have Natalie or Craig with me this weekend assisting, so ended up doing the BTS shots by myself... means that they are not as good!

This weekend we shot Cal... great bloke and a pretty interesting jobs outside the navy. A couple of interesting locations this weekend for the shoot, and it will be interesting to see which one we end up with.

A couple of images, the first few are of the approach to Garden Island, and the locations we shot in, and then a couple of screen shots of the images straight after I down loaded them, from those locations.

Condition Auditing iPhone snaps. Big thank you to the crew at Paul, PJ and crew from Fitizies, Bev and the girls from Artsource. 600 images are now printed, and packed into their first series of boxes. They are being picked up on Tuesday to head off to Dubai for framing. I will be relieved once they are picked up and on their way.

Abu Dhabi update....

Hi all, a bit of an update. Yes, I know the blog updates have slowed down a bit. But in the background there has been a bit of activity. For those of you who have read some of the recent posts, I have been very fortunate to be asked to be part of the fitout of a large hotel complex in Abu Dhabi. So over the Xmas period I have been working on the images and getting them ready. All the images are now at my favourite lab, Fitzgerald Photo Imaging (http://www.fitzgeraldphoto.com.au/) and I can't recommend these guys enough. They have made a very large project very easy and have been great to work. Thanks to Paul, PJ and Chris.

So where is it all up to? The first 388 images are done! What does that look like unframed. Well I'm glad you asked, as I was just down there...

I'm very excited to see this project coming together. Again, thank you to the crew at Fitzgerald Photo Imaging!

Firstly, yes I know... the blog has been a bit quiet in the last couple of weeks. My apologies, needed a bit a break with the lead up to Christmas and a lot of things happening. So before I forget, seasons greetings, and best wishes for the new year.

Now those of you who are on my Twitter and Facebook know that I mentioned something about a bit of an exciting update today. Well... here's the first surprise... its actually two updates. Well, ok, one update about to major projects I've been working on.

The first project has been about 1.5 years in the making, and before I tell you anything about it, a BIG thank you to GG, who, without his constant support, encouragement, guidance, pushing and vision, this project wouldn't have happened for me. He has done so much for my photography and artistic career, and that is even before this project I will never be able to thank him enough. A HUGE thanks to you Gary! Your one of a kind! The project, well, I have been asked to participate in the provision of over a couple of hundred large and extra large photographs as fine art pieces for a new premium hotel and complex in Abu Dharbi. Contracts and all that stuff have all been executed and production of the photographs are now underway in earnest. This is a huge project for me with an incredible learning curve. Large scale production, multi system colour management, fine art security device mechanisms, contracting, international freighting etc. Anyways I'm definitely not complaining ... in fact I am just so nervous, excited, humbled, excited, stunned, excited...well you get the image! Some of the pieces selected include a number of my signature pieces including my all time favourite...

I can't wait to see this up in the hotel! So standby, I'll do some photographs of the pieces once they are installed.

The next project is still a little bit of a secret, so I wont be going into too much detail at this stage. I was asked by some great guys (Dutchy, Renners, Gollo, and the General) to participate in a major national photographic project and fund-raising for a very worthy cause. The project is underway at the moment and we have been shooting for a couple of months, with a couple more months to go at this stage. Its a great project to be involved in and one that is creatively and technically challenging for me. So again, I'm getting more out of it than I ever expected and meeting some fantastic people as well. More details on this one as the project continues.

So, thats the news at the moment, oh, of course, I still have my numerous personal projects, photowalks, and portrait client work as well on top of all that. So looks like 2011 is going to be a busy year!! Better get off here and back to editing!!
